ESTONIAN WEEK – FILMS IN BUDAPEST, DEBRECEN AND SZEGED

Estonian party animals from the 90s, tension on the adventurous northern coast, an absurd spy story with a love twist, intrigues between the extremes – all this awaits those who come to the screenings. We will also be welcoming guests – two charming film directors Triin Ruumet and Vallo Toomla, both here in Budapesti with their first film, accompanied by Ülo Pikkov, a master in animation films.

Triin Ruumet's tragicomedy Päevad, mis ajasid segadusse (2016) is a story of a young man trying to make sense of life in the summer heat of late nineties Estonia. The 27-year- old protagonist Allar moves from one provincial party to another, meeting colourful characters and finding himself in evermore confusing circumstances. The amounting tension and absurdity of surrounding events lead Allar to give serious thought to his life. What follows, is a frantic journey through midsummer Estonia to finally discover meaning in oneself.

The film the special jury prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2016.

Mattias is a young talented photographer in his final year of secondary school, who has a dream to become a student of the Berlin Arts Academy. He unexpectedly falls in love with a wild red-haired beauty Hanna, who doesn't seem to take him seriously unless he proves to be just as adventurous and unpredictable as she is. Mattias risks his whole future by breaking the law together with Hanna, but ends up destroying the girl he loves. Hanna appears to suffer from bipolar disorder, the most dangerous effects of which are triggered by alcohol and drugs. Saving Hanna from herself, Mattias commits a crime that could end up putting him behind bars. His only solution for avoiding jail time is to get himself declared irresponsible. In order to achieve that, Mattias would have to start faking the illness his girlfriend already has - bipolarity.

Intent on repairing a rift in their relationship, Anna and Juhan retreat to a seaside house lent to them by well-heeled friends. After witnessing an accident on rocky shore, they take in a wounded woman and her husband – a couple they find they have a lot in common with. Anna and Juhan begin to pretend they own the house, engaging their guests in a game of domination that propels their relationship to the brink of destruction.

The film was screened at the San Sebastian Film Festival. Pretenders was filmed and won the award for the best film of the year by the Estonian Cultural Endowment.

Lonely secret service officer Gustav meets a mysterious gypsy woman. It soon comes clear that it is a trap set by the Russian intelligence. Gustav is ordered to continue the relationship to get a better understanding of the enemy's plans. Unfortunately, Gustav finds himself struggling with the task, as he is falling in love with the enemy. Is there a way out of this situation?


ANIMATION: SELECTION OF FILMS BY ÜLO PIKKOV

Ülo Pikkov was the student of Priit Pärn, a living legend of Estonian animation films. His films are often screened at various animation festivals around the world and have received several awards. Pikkov works as a director and a producer, teaches at the Estonain Art Acadamy and has publisheda book on animation theory. Ülo Pikkov will be joining us at the screening.

March 16 at BABtér (Templom tér 12, 2040 Budaörs): Animation fans have the chance to take part in a master class with Ülo Pikkov. The event will consist of a talk with the animation artist and a screening of his films. You may even meet a few of his animation figures at the event!
